These Paint Colors Will Help Sell Your Home For More

If you’re selling your home this year, you want to make the most money you can from your sale. One easy way to do that? The right wall color. Real estate site, Zillow, did a study that proves a fresh coat of paint really can help you sell your home for a higher price.

Exteriors: Greige Versus Tan

Your home’s exterior color could impact the sale price. Homes painted greige on the outside sold for nearly $3,500 more than similar homes painted in a medium brown or tan.

Cool, Neutral Colors FTW

This study looked at more than 32,000 photos from homes sold around the country. The goal was to see whether paint colors impacted sale prices, when compared to homes with white walls.

Zillow found that rooms painted light blue, pale blue-gray, and taupe/oatmeal/greige sold for more than homes with white rooms. Here’s a price breakdown of colors and rooms:

Blue Bathrooms

Those with light blue to periwinkle bathrooms sold for $5,440 more.

Gray-Blue Kitchens

Homes with blue kitchens, particularly soft gray blue, sold for about $1,800 more.

Slate Blue Dining Rooms

Slate blue dining rooms (which included a range of pale gray-blue to slate blue) sold for an average of $1,926 more.

Cerulean Bedrooms

Bedrooms painted light cerulean or cadet blue can come with a premium of more than $1,850.

Beige Living Rooms

Homes with light taupe, oatmeal or pale-beige living room walls sell for $1,926 more than expected.

Don’t Forget the Front Door

Front doors play an important role in curb appeal, so it’s no surprise they impact home sales prices, too. The winning color for front doors may surprise you, though. You might think that eye-catching pop of color – yellow, green or red – would set your home apart. In fact, the winners were navy blue and slate gray.

Cool, neutral colors appeal to a broad range of people. Fresh paint, in an appealing color, signals that your home is cared for and has other features buyers might want.

Colors to Avoid

As for what deters buyers? While some colors reduced sales prices (homes with terracotta dining rooms sold for about $2,000 less), the lack of color may have the biggest impact of all. This study showed that homes with white bathrooms sold for about $4,000 less than similar homes.

Other factors definitely impact sales prices, like the quality of upkeep, and the presence of wood floors, popcorn ceilings, and open floor plans. But selecting the right paint color has proven to be one of the most important factors in whether a home sells faster or for more money.
